As I mentioned last week, this week’s Kick The Box format will be a little different than usual. This week I will highlight my most anticipated crowd sourced games of 2014. These maybe games that were funded years prior and I finally received this year and can’t wait to get them to the table, whether for the first time or for the tenth time, or they may be games that were funded this year and can’t wait to receive them. Either way, they are all games that are tied to 2014 one way or another.

Kickstarter News: There is still a short amount of time to grab these lovely Velvet Dice Bags hand made by Valya. Ten Candles has broke $10,000 mark with their Kickstarter campaign. Still a week left to check out what all the hub bub is about! Still lots of time to get in on the Mistborn Allomancy Dice! They are almost to the 8 dice, 6 symbol stretch goal. Don’t know what I’m talking about? I guess you better hurry up and find out!

Lagoon: Land of the Druids

Lagoon: Land of the Druids has quickly become one of my favorite games of 2014. Crowdfunded on Kickstarter earlier this year, L:LotD is not only a solid two player game, but plays well at three and four players(I haven’t had the opportunity to try the solo variant yet.)

The premise of the game is each player is controlling a group of druids that are trying to align themselves with one of the three energies of this lovely evolving world. There are several actions that a player can take on their turn; they can move a druid to an already revealed tile, summon a druid from a player’s supply, or explore, which allows a player to draw and add a new tile to the board. Not only are these three basic actions available, but under the right conditions, you can also unravel, or destroy a tile and add it to your scoring pile.

Besides these basic actions, each tile also has an action that you can use if you have a druid on that tile. It’s this comboing of actions that make Lagoon a chess like match of planning and strategy. This game is pretty easy to teach, but it also has a lot more depth and strategy than at first glance.

Couple that with the fact you aren’t totally sure which energy seeds and unraveled tiles are going to score you points til the very end of the game makes for a tense power struggle that I can’t wait to endure again and again.


Project By: Watchtower Games

Fallen is a game that I had the pleasure of play testing post Kickstarter campaign this last year and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the final product.

That day finally came on Christmas Eve. Fallen was funded in 2013 and suffered several different delays along the way. Watchtower Games did an exceptional job of keeping their 1.311 backers in the loop, week in, week out as they overcome the various obstacles that were thrown at them along the way.

Fallen is a two player game. One player will play as the hero, diving deep into the dungeon, avoiding traps and pitfalls, as he battles against some of the nastiest minions known to man. The other player will be playing as the Dungeon Lord, summoning creatures and ancient spells trying to weaken the hero before the final battle between the two commences.

This game offers so much replayability with it’s Choose Your Own Adventure style story cards. Not only are there a lot of story cards available, but the options within each story card as players progress are numerous. I can’t wait to get it to the table again.


Project By: Far Off Games



Xia was the game that sucked me into Kickstarter. I didn’t have a sandbox style game in my collection, and this filled that hole very nicely.

Xia funded in June of 2013 and I received my copy a couple months ago. Cody is another designer that did everything right the first time around. Like Watchtower Games, he was posting weekly updates keeping the backers in the loop and invested into his project long after the ringing of the funding bell.

I’ve only been able to play this game twice so far, just because of time constraints, but I enjoyed every minute of the game play and can’t wait to get it to the table again.

In case you’re not familiar with the Xia phenomenon, it is a game that you can get points for just about anything. If you want to become a merchant, you can gain points for selling goods. If you want to terrorize your buddies by stocking up on guns and missiles and blowing theirs and NPC ships up, you gain points that way. Exploring gains you a point. Heck, you can even get a point for rolling a natural 20 on a D20! (It’s called Luck) These are just a few examples of ways to gain points. You add the high quality components of pre painted minis, nice cardboard and cardstock, and amazing metal coins with the true nature of the sandbox gameplay, and you have one helluva winner!

This was going to be on my anticipated to receive list til it showed up the day before Fallen did! (Yes I had an amazing pre Christmas!) So, it falls into my can’t wait to actually play category.

Viticulture is a strategic, worker placement game about wine making. Players will compete against one another trying to be the first to develop the most prestigious Tuscan vineyard. Of course, players have next to nothing to start off with, and have to work their workers to the bone through the seasons, year after year, in order for this to happen.

The other part of this duo package is Tuscany. Tuscany is a legacy style set of different expansions that can be added to the game. After a few plays, players will start to add more to the game. The winner of each game can choose which expansion they want to add for the next game.

I’ve also heard that it’s a worker placement game that actually plays well with two people. That is a definite bonus!

Viticulture/Tuscany needs to hit the table soon and a lot!

Twilight Struggle: Digital Edition

Awwww . . . Twilight Struggle. Why do you have to be such a long game? This is a game I  have a tough time getting to the table. So, when the digital version of the game was announced and released on Kickstarter, it was a no brainer to back it.

Now, don’t get me wrong, a digital version of a board game will never replace the physical version, but some games are just tough to get to the table.

The advantage of this getting a digital release, is you know everyone that is connected is wanting to play it, instead of trying to coax one of your friends or loved ones to sit down, learn it, and or play it.

For those not familiar with Twilight Struggle, it is another two player game. This time players represent the US and the USSR during the Cold War era. Players will try to spread their influence across the globe as the years past all the while not causing a Nuclear War.

The cards are based on real world events that happened during this historical time period. Not only does Twilight Struggle offer a learning experience, but is also one of the best strategic games on the market.
