It’s already starting up – screeds on placing pre-orders, canceling pre-orders, drop shipping pre-orders directly into the sun, raffling off pre-order forms. Must be a new iteration of Dungeons & Dragons on the horizon.
Here’s the thing – the edition wars are so 2000’s. If the massive, hugely populated sphere of RPGs available for you to play has taught us anything, it should be this: play what you like. If you’re excited about the imminent release of a new D&D edition, then I’m excited for you! We’ll walk towards the hobby shop together, slapping high fives and grinning like we just slaughtered an owlbear. If you have absolutely no desire to even think about D&D Next/5th/5e – then we’ll walk towards DriveThruRPG together, slapping high fives and grinning like we just died in a hardcore Fiasco play set as we figure out the next Indie RPG to take on.
Seriously – Wizards of the Coast is putting out a new version of D&D and some people will love it while others will not. Let’s all get past that (those who haven’t) and get on with having a good time playing in the hobby we all freaking love. Play to have a good time, play in universes you feel needs creating, play the games that will make you grin from ear to ear. It’s not better than some other game, it’s not any worse, it’s what allows you to stretch your imagination and have a good time so just get on with it, right? Right.
