Indie Talks Episode 27 – Christopher Helton

I get to congratulate yet another Ennie award winner in the person of Chris Helton! Battlefield Press, who Chris is part owner, published the wonderful and Ennie award winning Eldritch Skies! Chris and I talk getting into gaming, making the transition from creative gamer to game creation and what it’s like to win an Ennie award. We also discuss his newest project, which deals with the as of yet untapped RPG genre of paranormal romance!

I’d also like to mention that this year’s Extra Life campaign is live! I’ll be playing table top games for not 24 hours straight, but 25 hours straight to raise money for Children’s Hospitals. Please check out my Extra Life page and if you have a few bucks, I’d greatly appreciate your sponsorship!

This year I’m treating this one (granted full) day event as my own little convention. I had the somewhat crazy idea to reach out to game publishers and see about getting some prize support for those folks who’ll be joining Team Troll and themselves raising money for Extra Life.

A big thanks to two more publisher who stepped up and gave us some games to support our players and events so we can raise even more money for children’s hospitals!

A huge thanks to Eagle-Gryphon games! They’ve stepped up and have some titles heading my way! They have a couple of exciting new titles that you should check out! Francis Drake – Return to a bustling Plymouth Harbor in 1572 as an aspiring Elizabethan captain making preparations for three exciting voyages to the Spanish Main in search of fame and fortune! As captains, players will have to plan their missions and provision their ships accordingly. Also take a gander at Karesansui – As Grade Two monastery initiates in Karesansui – the cutthroat game of Zen gardening – it will be your great honor to tend the Masters’ rock gardens. Each morning the Grade Ones arrive with rocks they’ve gathered, then haul away the rocks that you don’t need anymore – but there aren’t enough Grade One initiates to go around, so there will be competition for the best selection of rocks.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that Eagle-Gryphon have published two titles from on of my favorite game designers, Alf Seegert!  Check out The Road to Canterbury and Fantastiqa!

Alderac Entertainment Group (or as most of us know them, AEG) generously supplied several games towards my campaign and Team Troll! AEG provided us with Guildhall, Card of the Dead and Maximum Throwdown! Some will be heading out to team members, some will be played by yours truly! I’d also like to point out two of my favorite AEG games!

First, Love Letter. Very simple, 16 cards, a few wooden cubes and a bag – but infinitely repayable with just enough back stabbing goodness to make it really fun. This game is also the darling of our Google Plus Board Games community – it seems most gamers love it, and it’s cheap to boot!

Next, a game that’s been out for a while, but which I finally had a chance to play this weekend, and fall in love with. Smash Up! The base game comes with 8 different faction decks of 20 cards each. Such things as robots, ninjas and dinosaurs to name a few. Each player grabs two different decks, smashes them together and then attempts to take over as many bases as they can, while also fending off the other players. Well worth grabbing as a fun, 30-45 minute game for 2-4 players.
