Playing until 2am can be awesome… unless it’s because you’re still on the first encounter. Here are 5 ways that DMs and players can work together to keep combat moving quickly, making sure you’ve got a good balance of RP and tactics in your games.

  1. Using an egg timer or toothbrush timer for each turn, giving each player a minute or two to do their action can really increase the pace and force people to keep their eye on the game.

  2. My group actually has the opposite problem. We’re playing 1st ed. Palladium Fantasy and our combats fly by, causing the GM to have to come up with many more encounters per session. 🙂

    Of course, we did once spend two hours trying to cross a river, so we make up for it in other areas.
