Adventurer’s Toolbox – Bags of Holding

I have written a couple of article in this series already covering Immovable Rods and Feather Tokens. The next item up for bid is the Bag of Holding. Now, before I’m downed out in the chorus of “Yeah, that’s obvious,” let’s take a look at the stat block from the Pathfinder SRD:

This appears to be a common cloth sack about 2 feet by 4 feet in size. The bag of holding opens into a nondimensional space: its inside is larger than its outside dimensions. Regardless of what is put into the bag, it weighs a fixed Amount. This weight, and the limits in weight and volume of the bag’s contents, depend on the bag’s type, as shown on the table below.

If a bag of holding is overloaded, or if sharp objects pierce it (from inside or outside), the bag immediately ruptures and is ruined, and all contents are lost forever. If a bag of holding is turned inside out, all of its contents spill out, unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again. If living creatures are placed within the bag, they can survive for up to 10 minutes, after which time they suffocate. Retrieving a specific item from a bag of holding is a move Action, unless the bag contains more than an ordinary backpack would hold, in which case retrieving a specific item is a full-round action. Magic items placed inside the bag do not offer any benefit to the character carrying the bag.

If a bag of holding is placed within a portable hole, a rift to the Astral Plane is torn in the space: bag and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost. If a portable hole is placed within a bag of holding, it opens a gate to the Astral Plane: the hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 10-foot radius are drawn there, destroying the portable holeand bag of holding in the process.

The first and most obvious thing that makes this object supremely useful is that it can hold a lot of freaking stuff! The same can be said of any extra-dimensional space. Much like the other items I’ve talked about, it’s how you make use of this item that makes it special. I’ve heard of some amazingly unique ideas that groups have come up with. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for use of the Bag of Holding.

Smuggling Device

If you need to get yourself and a group of people into a tightly-secured area (one that’s not covered with Detect Magic/Alarm spells, of course), pop them into a Bag of Holding, give the bag to the rogue and start the 10-minute timer. As long as you’ve got a bag with a high enough capacity, then you’re off to the races. And this idea works even better if you’re smuggling things that don’t need to breathe…

Undead Storage

If you’re an enterprising necromancer, where do you intend to store all of your creations? I mean, those things do tend to start to stink after a while, plus it’s not the easiest thing in the world to get them into a city without attracting undue notice. So, toss them into a Bag, get to the location you want to terrorize and open the bag. Then, make yourself invisible and get out of Dodge.

Makeshift Trap

Fill your handy bag with your potentially deadly/inconveniencing item (good examples are water, sand, marbles, flasks of Alchemist’s Fire, etc), find a handy perch above your target and turn the bag inside out. If you’re a prankster, substitute your deadly item with grape jelly, Bead of Force, what have you.

Instant Escape

If you read the text above, then you know that if you mix a Portable Hole and a Bag og Holding, you get an instant rift to the Astral Plane. Now, this is one I wouldn’t try unless you’re of a high enough level to get back to the Prime, but if you need a quick getaway, just drop your Bag into your Hole (and stop with the raunchy jokes) and poof: you’re away from wherever it was you were. Like I said, it might be tricky to get back, but I don’t write these things to solve all your problems.

I think that gives you the idea. Basically, this item can hold mostly whatever you want and disgorge it at will. As well, with some creative interpretations of the rules, you can fit quite a bit into these bags. For example, when I run a game, I don’t worry much about putting sharp objects inside or how wide the opening is. I figure that it’s more fun to have the rules be a bit flexible.

So, if you want to carry a lot of stuff or just stretch your brain and come up with an inventive plot for revenge, grab a bag and get to it.
