Punch Bowl! The game you don’t need to buy to play

Here’s a fun game to play with 8 or more of your closest friends.  It won’t cost you much more than your time provided you own all of the components, which you probably do.

Punch Bowl!

Required to play:
1. A punch bowl.
2. Paper.
3. Pens.
4. An egg timer, or stop watch.

Preparing to play:

1. Set up teams. To make things more fun, put significant others on different teams. If two people are mortal enemies, ensure they are on the same team for added spice. Make your teams as even as possible. For 9 people, 3 teams of 3 works well.

2. Each person takes two scraps of paper and on them writes down a famous name. They can be real or imaginary people, living or dead. Examples: Albert Einstein. Micky Mouse. Sarah Conner. Ronald Reagan. Etc.

3. Fold each piece of paper in half, and then again in half. Put them all in the punch bowl and mix. DO NOT add punch!

Playing the game:

Round One

Pick a starting team. From that team, one person will go to the Salad Bowl, pick a piece of paper and silently read the name on that paper. They then have one minute to try and get their teammates to guess the name. They can say anything they want except the name on the paper. They can also use any gestures they wish, except for spelling the name in the air. If their team mates guess correctly in one minute, they keep the paper. If not, the paper gets folded up and put back into the bowl.  If your team guesses the name, you pull another from the bowl and continue until your minute is up.

Play continues clockwise, with each team having one team member go to the bowl, until the bowl is empty.

Count up the pieces of paper held by each team. Each piece of paper is worth one point. Someone keep track of team scores as you’ll need to add up all three rounds at the end of the game.

Round Two

Put all of the papers back into the bowl.

Now one person from each team again goes to the bowl and draws one piece of paper. This time, they can only say three words total. They can still use any gestures they wish except for spelling the name in the air. They cannot say the name on the paper and their team has 1 minute to guess. If someone on their team guesses, they keep the paper. If your team guesses the name, you pull another from the bowl and continue until your minute is up.

Play continues clockwise, with each team having one team member go to the bowl, until the bowl is empty.

Count up the pieces of paper held by each team. Each piece of paper is now worth two points. Someone keep track of team scores!

Round Three

Again, all the paper goes back into the bowl, properly folded. Same basic play plan, except now whoever draws the name from the bowl cannot speak. They can use any gestures or movements they want. Their team has 1 minute to guess the name on the paper. If they guess correctly, they can keep the paper. If your team guesses the name, you pull another from the bowl and continue until your minute is up.

This round, each team gets three points per piece of paper they’ve collected.

Add up the total scores from each round to determine which team wins.
