Save the date – June 19th, 2010 is FREE RPG DAY!

What, pray tell is Free RPG Day? It’s just what it sounds like.  Role Playing Game publishers are allowing retailers to get packages of free, new, good RPG stuff – mostly self contained adventures so you can try out a new system before you buy.

The key is – the swag will only be available through brick and mortar game and hobby shops. This is good on two levels.  One, those of us who love and treasure free stuff will get more free stuff.  Two – publishers get exposure.  If someone hands me a free game with everything I need to play it, I’m gonna try it out.  That may mean new consumers who get roped in through a try before you buy approach.

As a bonus, brick and mortar hobby stores may also make a buck.

  1. This sounds like awesome but I asked my local store and they said that the “FREE” items costs money to buy so that they can be given free to customers… check this out: and you can see that each kit is $60 dollars.

If your store makes a buck, they’ll probably be $59 dollars down 🙂

  2. Yup, it does cost $60 per box, per retail location. But think of it this way – how much does a spot on your local radio station cost? How about an ad in the local paper?

$60 isn’t all that much to spend when you’ve got (in theory anyway) lots of local gamers eager to set foot in to your shop to get some free stuff. Hell, they may even buy something. You may end up with a few repeat customers which is worth a heck of a lot more than $60.

    That’s my view anyway.

  3. Pay $60 – attract people who want free stuff and will never visit the B&M again until the next FREE RPG day: sound like a great marketing plan….
