Watchmen: Justice is Coming is a new MMO set to milk the waning Watchmen bandwagon. Set in 1975 New York City, you play as a masked vigilante setting out to clean up the mean streets with your wits and fists. It’s sets are dark, desolate, and it’s always, always raining.
These would have been cutting edge graphics as a PSX launch title. It’s on par with the very first Tomb Raider from the same era. It isn’t all that bad though, there are many recognizable landmarks from the comic and the movie strung throughout, but the graffiti is overwrought and over done. Expect to see “Who Watches the Watchmen” on just about every third wall.
Boring. You have three attacks to choose from, you can earn more when you level up, but you can only have three available to use in combat at any one time. You level up your hero via PvP, finding clues, and GARBAGE PICKING, that’s right, garbage picking. You dumpster dive for costume pieces.
I’ve played for several hours, and charged my battery once already. I’ve run into three other players, all of whom were looking for a PvP. There is chat built in, but nobody seems interested in talking.
Not much to talk about here. You are initially charged with finding a kidnapped teenager, but the slow movement and glitches will have you stumbling across clues instead of searching for them, especially when every player you run into wants to fight.
It’s outdated, but for a game set 33 years ago, it seems kind of appropriate. It’s slow and grinding, but somehow fits in with the atmosphere of Watchmen. It’s also 99 cents, which is a pretty good price. It’s a C+ game, compared to it’s brother game Watchmen: The End is Nigh, is less advanced, but way better.
The only real huge downside to the game that could be a dealbreaker for you is that you cannot play offline at all. This is a pretty OK game if you have good 3G coverage or if you are always near a WiFi hub, but if you are not near either of these, save your money and try to find the fabled Watchmen table top RPG from the 80s.
I don’t know, it’s a buck so if you don’t like it, no big loss. I kind of enjoy it even though it does eat my battery fairly quickly.
