Role-playing games immerse the player into amazing worlds of adventure, action, and excitement. RPG games typically feature deep elaborated elements that take the player on a quest or series of quests in which they must solve puzzles, find objects, team up with allies, defeat foes, and much more. Rplaying games are often set in elaborately detailed worlds of fun and fantasy.

Happy to hear you liked the review Zman. I'll be doing more in-depth reviews of games in the future, but for a quick recommendation I would suggest Spirit of the Century or Savage Worlds.

Been looking for a decent zombie role playing game with simple rules.. this one looks like it'll work! Do you have any more suggestions for a good starter role playing game?

Great post! (And not just because it links to my site!)

I just wanted to add a couple of things, if that's okay:

1. Read an RPG Book in Public Week happens three times a year, for the benefit of those who missed the last one, or weren't able to participate. The next one is in late July. Of course, you can read RPG books in public anytime you want - the reason for the special event is to get people excited about participating and sharing stories and pictures, etc.

2. Running RPGs in the local library is an excellent way to increase interest in the hobby - my site has a section on doing this, called Terra Libris (found at www.theescapist.com/library) One of the things I do there is compile a schedule of library RPG events from all over, both to increase their exposure, and supply contact information for anyone else who is hoping to do the same thing.

While you're there, look around at the site for a while - I try to put together as many resources for the positive promotion of the roleplaying hobby as possible.

Thanks again!

I'm a geek, in pretty much every sense of the word. I like computers and technology, board games, video games, roleplaying games, and improvisational comedy (just for a bit of contrast). Gaming, in one form or another, has been a part of life ever since adolescence, when I first tried my hand at Shadowrun and AD&D (2nd Edition of both). Along the way, I flirted with CCGs, discovered true love in indie RPGs, and developed a serious board game habit. I'm less serious about video games, but I do enjoy gaming on my Wii, DS, and more recently, my iPhone.

I was a problem player. I realized it on my own, I reformed the way I was playing. I have more fun now, but still get frustrated with people who try to parley with bugbears but have no problem pickpocketing commoners.

I dont understand why they didnt go with Fuzion instead of Interlock.. :( but I guess I can see that going with interlock gives them access to the metric multitude tonnage of CP2020 splatbooks with the interlock ruleset... and its not that hard to convert interlock to fuzion but ohwell :(

You would think they would go with it since they used it for Victoriana so they already have inhouse knowledge of it, etc..

I was interested until I saw the price :(

One of my favorite things to do, even though I like to note player stats, order, etc is as follows:

Me: You come to a closed door.

Party Leader: I open it.

Me: Okay everyone, how many hit points do you all have?

The Party: (exchanging glances) 22, 18, 9, 15

Me: Right. The room's empty. Now what do you do?

Keeps everyone on their toes.

When I made a few tweaks and added reference tables to a popular digital sheet on BYOND, I made a point of adding Rule Zero among those references. I have to agree with Take Notes though, we sometimes don't use a gameboard, and even though we RP everything down to wiping our backsides, the DM always seems to ask "Okay, who's standing outside?" when it's about to rain death on us.

Thanks Rolling20s. I'm often surprised at who will give it a try. I've had more success starting people on games other than D&D though. A lot of people will just have a knee-jerk reaction to it.

Dan, that's good stuff. I had great success with a variation on the 'Ask Your Friends' advice you gave; I asked my family members, and I was surprised at the response. When everyone can make it, I now run a game with 7 players. Try it, it can work.

No, it's very much not dead. I write a blog that while new, is all about modern games in general and the Dark Future in specific.

I REALLY look forward to seeing how this game turns out and thanks for the news!

Hmm. But I have the entire rules set committed to memory and I'm always right.

(cough). Believe me, I'll take that looking up during the break advice. Plus that means mandatory snack breaks, which I'm very much in favor of.

I enjoyed the entire article as well! I'm going to be starting a new campaign in a newish (to me) system soon so this article couldn't come at a better time.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, Dan. I think that's a good rule of thumb, even if your group knows the system forward and back; don't break up the flow to get the 'official' answer to a question, just look it up during a break.

Good start! My own piece of advice on learning new systems is to write down any questions that come up during play. Look up the answers during the snack break or after the game instead of interrupting the game. This also has the added benefit of preventing rules lawyering at the table.

Thanks Eclipse. I'm having a lot of fun creating. My one gripe is that I'm constantly running out of time to do this - but, I have to pay the bills.

I just found your site and have been reading through it a bit. Just wanted to let you know I've been enjoying what you have here, particularly the world of Aruneus and all the politics going on between the different organizations. It looks like you've put a lot of time and effort into developing the people and places, and I look forward to delving into it more.

I second your thanks to a god that Mr. Bay is not involved.

I'd love to see more of the drama side of things as well. The book worked well in part because it was written by a Vietnam Vet who was portraying his experiences through a pair of sci-fi colored glasses. I'd hate for the movie to lose that. Or *shudder* become Starship Troopers (the movie).

Having seen Avatar I hold a bit of hope that Scott will be able to pull it off. If it's going to be toted as a sci-fi, then you'll probably see more of the action scenes with tid bits of the back story and larger portion dealing with the effects of time dilation. If it's intended to be more of a drama (aka. space opera) then it will probably be like Battlestar Galactica which was first a drama, then sci-fi, and lastly action.

If FW is done more in the way of a drama I will be happy (don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to stasis fields and Megawatt lasers as much as the next guy). My main concern is that there are curtain topics in the book that will have heads rolling. People on both sides of politics will be saying its inappropriate, but I think society as a whole could learn a lot from this book (and hopefully the film as well).

All I can say is THANK GOD MICHEAL BAY DIDN'T GET IT.

I'm going to leave zombie regen off the books for now. At least, until I can play test this with and without it.

It's not quite the 'classic' zombie feel I'm going for. That said though I always urge you to remember 3 points.

1. You can take what you'd like out of this and add/remove/modify to suit your own needs.
2. Knives are sharp. Load them in the dishwasher pointy side down.
3. There are things that I'm not going to publish here or anywhere else until I've actually gotten this campaign off the ground and until my players have experienced them. Why? Because I don't want to give stuff away!

As for corruption. I think 100 years ago, 99 years ago corruption ran rampant. Now though, folks would think long and hard before bringing a potential infected person into their city, village or home.

Racial tensions...yes! One thing I've found out is this world I'm creating could have so much depth politically, societally, etc. There's a lot to work with here. It's awesome.

I too am fond of lighter than air ships. :) Best way to avoid zombies is to never let them touch you.
