As you all know, this summer, I’m attending GenCon for the first time. As this is my first time going, I’m not scheduling myself too heavily with events so I can let the event take me where it will. There is one exception, though. On Thursday, I will be participating in the DM’s Gauntlet.

It is being run by the Iron Players (think Iron Chef, from Food Network, but with RPGs). Here is the info from their website:

The DM’s Gauntlet is a grueling secondary competition that takes place during the Iron Player Championship.  We take seven unknown DUngeon Masters and pit them against one another to test their merit against award winning Iron Dungeon Masters.  Dungeon Master’s brave enough to take on the gauntlet must DUngeon Master 3 seperate groups in 3 seperate ways.

1. They will have to make up a mini adventure given several adventure hooks.

2. They will have to add their own style and flair and DM a group through a deadly Prepared mini-module.

3. They will have to compete head to head alongside an Iron Dungeon Master in an epic boss battle.

I don’t know exactly why, but something about this event really intrigued me. I’ve run marathon sessions before, but always for my own group, in a setting with which I am intimately familiar. I’ve also run sessions on short notice that were largely improvisational. I have never had the opportunity to do both of those things at the same time, with players that I have not previously met. I’m really excited to give this a try. The whole thing is scheduled to last 7.5 hours, and I’m sure that by the end of it, I’ll be tried and worn out, but I also expect to leave with a sense of satisfaction. It’s a big chunk of time to spend gaming, especially at the start of a Con. I’ll let you know if it was a huge mistake.

So, if you think you have the same desire to test your mettle against the Iron DMs, and you’re going to be at GenCon, then I suggest you sign up for this event. At the least, it seems like it’s going to be a really good time, and a really good test of my DMing abilities.
