Section 8 looks to bring new, shiny things to FPS games

For the first time in a long time I'm actually looking forward to a new FPS game. Section 8 looks quite appealing to me, both visually and in game play style. I love that when you spawn into the game you start in a dropship and then "burn in" to the battlefield, essentially dropping from orbit onto the field at the location of your choice. That to me beats the hell out of the competition where you either randomly spawn in some backwoods location or directly into the line of fire of a spawn camper.

Russian UFO landing sites identified and photographed from the ISS.

Astronauts on the ISS and the NASA Earth Observatory have identified several mysterious circles forming under the ice of the deepest lake in the world. Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is "t is the largest (by volume) and deepest (1,637 meters at the deepest point) fresh water lake on Earth. It is also one of the world’s oldest lakes (25-30 million years old); sediment deposited on the bottom is up to 7 kilometers deep. The lake’s long, thin, and deep shape results from its location in the Baikal Rift Valley."

Mount & Blade Native Expension mod has glued my face to my monitor

There's nothing quit like sitting my ass down on my trusty steed, grasping my lance in hand and charging right through the enemy line. While that last sentence comes across as vaguely sexual, in actuality I'm referring to Mount & Blade - the best fantasy medieval simulator I've ever come across.

An Old Friend has Come Home to Stay

I received a belated-by-a-decade Christmas gift of a Playstation console from my parents this week. Forgotten in storage, it was still factory sealed and itching for me to take it for a spin.

Warriors with Terry Schappert, a Must See for Geeks and History Buffs

Now a show about history's great battles, and the civilizations that fought them, is hardly new for the History channel, being in fact their bread and butter. (Well, that and anything related to Hitler) What makes this show much more powerful and fascinating is its host Terry Schappert. Terry is a Green Beret, a member of one of the most elite military organizations in the entire world. This gives him a very different take on the subject than the standard professors and experts they get to narrate and host.

Arcane Power, the first must have supplement of D&D 4.0

I know a lot of people complain about the sheer number of add-ons and supplements Wizards of the Coast puts out for D&D, not to mention that after you buy all the books for one edition they come out with a new one. It's definitely an argument I understand, and certainly some of the books are superfluous. Thankfully this one, Arcane Power, isn't one of those, but is actually a very useful addition to anyone using arcane classes in their games (which let's face it, is basically everyone playing D&D)

Blood Magic and Nights of Sin, The Ballad of Kirin Widowmaker

So why am I so ambivalent about this series? The character is interesting, the world mostly unique. In a word, pain. The author Matthew Cook goes out of his way to bash it into the reader's head that everyone (protagonist included) thinks that necromancy and blood magic are abominations, an evil that taints whoever uses it, no matter for what purpose or intent. Conflicted protagonists and anti-heroes can make for compelling stories (such as my favorite, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, which I highly recommend) but this is just a little too much, a little too depressing, especially in the second novel.
